OUR impact

Below are some of the things we’ve done to positively further our impact:

  • FOOD WASTE

We minimise our food waste by utilising as much of the whole ingredient as we can. What is left over goes to Waste Ninja - a recycling service which converts the methane produced by leftover food waste into biogas which is delivered back into the Melbourne power grid.

  • PACKAGING

We offer our customers a variety of packaging options which enable them to make the most sustainable choice possible including Returnr bowls - a deposit-based system whereby customers are able to take away and bring back their reusable bowl – as well as the option to bring their own (clean) bowl. As a last resort we offer Biopak disposable packaging.

  • PRODUCE

We choose to work with suppliers who are as local as possible to our store. As a result of this, 95% of our ingredients come from Victoria and all of our fresh produce comes from within a 100km radius of the store.

  • UTILITIES & SERVICES

Green-On chooses to work and build relationships with companies who align with our shared passion for environmental sustainability. We bank with Bank Australia because they don’t they don’t invest in nasty things like fossil fuels, deforestation or drilling.

Since we’ve had the gas removed and run completely electric we rely on our 100% Australian-owned energy provider Red Energy to keep the lights on (literally).

  • PROCESSES

The choices we make in our everyday operations (while small) contribute to our brand ethos to do the best you can with what is available to you. We operate as a paperless business with our menus displayed on digital screens and our receipts available to customers via text or email.

We reduce the use of toxic chemicals and plastic by using eWater - a salt base solution that goes through an electrolyser that produces a cleaner and sanitiser. It can cut grease, clean windows, sanitise surfaces, wash floors and so much more. Our paper towel (which is a requirement for our food safety program to dry our hands after washing) is from Who Gives A Crap.

  • STORE DESIGN

Working with Australian makers and (where possible) renewable materials, we aim to create a store environment which reflects our passion for sustainability. Our benchtop (Betta Stone) is made from a crystalline silica free recycled glass, our stools (Design by Them) are fabricated using 80% recycled plastic and our tables (Aarden Design) are made with Kobe Board - an environmentally friendly composite of wood and cement.

Look out for our beautiful honey dripper pendant light by furniture and lighting studio Coco Flip and our dine-in ceramic bowls and mugs from The Good Plate - a local ceramics studio with a focus on giving back.
